WHO WE ARE

Shaping Urban Environments

Since its inception in 1967, DP has designed many of the country’s most important public projects and notable landmarks. Each of these has played a critical role in shaping Singapore’s civic urban landscape and downtown core, by linking spaces of the city in the formation of a continuous urban fabric. These sites serve as social and cultural anchors for Singapore and as public nodes of human density that have contributed greatly to the city’s success. DP has also been involved with urban projects of immense scale and increasing diversity of function; some of the firm’s works are the largest of their type in the world.

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

The Esplanade, located in Singapore’s downtown, is the result of a long-term drive by the city to establish a centre for the performing arts. DPA designed the performance and library facilities over the course of a decade, and with its opening in 2002, the complex became the civic heart of Singapore and a functional centrepiece connecting Singapore’s financial and entertainment districts.

The Dubai Mall 

With a site area of 34 hectares, gross floor area of 550,000sqm and 23km of shopfronts – The Dubai Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in the world and one of the world’s most visited leisure destination. Conceptualised as a ‘city within a city’, The Dubai Mall is divided into eight precincts of different characters and designed with nodes, internal streets and façades for legibility.

Singapore Sports Hub

This is the world’s largest hub ecosystem of its kind that bridges sports and the community, with venues that cater to world-class sporting events and everyday participation. Located on a waterfront site adjacent to the heart of Singapore, an unusual location for a sports development of this scale, the hub is designed to be people-centric, shaped by careful arrangement of different elements and striking a balance between the identity of a national icon and viability of a public-private partnership.

Orchard Road

DP has designed, retrofitted and reworked nearly 30 projects on and around Orchard Road, redeveloping an entire shopping corridor and contributing to Orchard Road’s transformation into one of Singapore’s, and Asia’s, great urban spaces; a rare example of the long-term influence of a single design firm on an urban centre.

Marina Bay

DP Architects has worked on 14 major projects of diverse building types on and around Marina Bay between 1969 and 2014, shaping the spatial character and identity of the urbanscape which has become the popular representation of contemporary Singapore.

DP has been involved with urban projects of immense scale and increasing diversity of function; some of the firm’s works are the largest of their type in the world.

Expertise in Diverse Typologies

DPA has a long history in a wide variety of projects remarkable in its diversity of scale and typology.

To further deepen the critical understanding and appreciation of the profession, DP has formed 10 building typology research groups to generate research and develop expertise in key design typologies – namely, Retail and Mixed Development; Residential; Healthcare; Hospitality; Civic, Community, Sports & Art; Commercial & Office; Education; Transport Infrastructure Architecture; Theme Parks; and Urban Planning.

These 10 dedicated focus groups research developments in technology, techniques, trends and user need of their identified typology and develop architectural design unique to the typology. A newly formed Design Intelligence department further contributes to the exploration and research into areas of new hybrid typologies, digital prototyping and advanced geometry.

This concerted endeavour reinforces the practice’s creative process and focus on specialisation, and is further aided by a robust support network of departments such as Design, Documentation and Specification, Contracts and Practice and Code Compliance and Quality.
