Crowne Plaza Chengdu Wenjiang and Holiday Inn Express
An Urban Oasis
The development comprises two resorts and hot-spring hotels: the 458-key Chengdu Wenjiang Crowne Plaza and the 150-key Holiday Inn Express. These two hotels of 25 and 12 storeys sit on a five-storey podium with shared amenities including a large ballroom and a large hot-spring facilities.
Located between a river park towards the south and an urban park towards the north, an urban green belt that is part of the city urban planning also runs along the eastern part of the site. Designing the site as an extension of the green belt, the project is positioned as an urban oasis.
Details
The massing was configured to showcase the development as a landmark. Instead of a monolithic block, the architecture organises the different building components with consideration to the relationship with the functions within; tying them together is the façade design. Drawing from the idea of ‘Chinese screens’, aluminium screen-like panels of varying dimensions are juxtaposed to give each of the hotels and podium a distinct look, yet present a coherent overall identity.

The three main components have their own distinct façade expression while share a coherent identity.
The Crowne Plaza hotel tower is positioned at the southeast corner, acting as a landmark for the city and addressing visitors coming across the bridge from the south. The hotel is oriented to provide the maximum vantage points, whether it is the splendid river view on the higher levels or the outdoor central garden at the lower floors. The highlight of the development is the column-free 23.5m x 50m at 18.5m lobby. A central skylight bathes the space in natural light. A large portion of the site is set aside for greenery and outdoors landscaping, including hot spring facilities.
